7N32-0B70 VINTAGE PILOT (QUARTZ VARIANT OF 4S15-7020 / SCFF001). Around 1991, Seiko noticed a gap between their product offerings and the preferences of younger consumers. To address this, they initiated the SUS project, short for "Simple" and "Strong, " aiming to create analog watches appealing to young adults who grew up with digital watches.
The project was led by engineers Chitoshi Funamoto and Atsushiko Matsuno, who conducted surveys on young adults to understand their preferences. The team focused on minimalist, utilitarian designs inspired by historical military, aviation, and railroad timekeepers, emphasizing readability at a glance.The resulting SUS watches were popular in Japan and remained in production for 8 years, offering various models with different movements and complications. One standout from the SUS collection is the legendary SUS 4S15-7020 / SCFF001 "military, " released in early 1996, embodying the project's philosophy. And among those series, this model 7N32-0B70 was released as a quartz variant with "stylish" aesthetics. It features not only the similar bezel, crown, handsets, and water resistance, but also more reliable&accurate quartz movement, long lasting lume and refined pilot dial, all in the classier brushed stainless steel case. It's reliable and highly legible in any condition, and yet in style.
It's a fancy watch by no means, but there's something special about creative fusion of minimalism and functionality, making it a unique timepiece. Strongly recommended for those who seek robust simplicity without compromising subtle elegance. I cannot guarantee you if it still retains the original value as it is a vintage watch and I haven't had it professionally water tested recently.
